 87. PROJECT:Squaw Creek Water Supply
LEVEL:III
SPONSOR:Squaw Creek Water District
LOCATION:Teton County
PROGRAM:New Development

EXISTING LEGISLATION:
Purpose Chapter Session Account Appropriation Due Date
Level III 206 1995 I $580,000* 1998
*67% grant, 33% loan (4%, 20 years)

PROJECT INFORMATION:
In 1990, the Squaw Creek Water District requested assistance from the WWDC in locating an additional water supply and protecting the existing spring from surface water contamination. The district presently serves 40 taps and has the potential to expand to serve up to 72 taps.

In 1991, the Level I study evaluated the existing water supply system and determined that the spring could be subject to surface water contamination. Further, it was concluded that the spring was inadequate to meet the needs of the district and that additional storage was necessary.

In 1992, the Level II work consisted of drilling a test well at the location selected during the Level I investigation. Unfortunately, the well did not produce sufficient water to serve the district. It was determined that additional exploration should be performed. During the 1993 Legislative Session, the Level II budget was increased to drill additional exploration wells. WWDC spent most of 1993 attempting to locate a suitable drilling site. The effort was abandoned due to the cost of access and access road construction to the suitable sites. Finally, negotiations with the Forest Service proved successful in gaining permission to drill several alluvial wells in the Game Creek vicinity.

The Game Creek wells proved to be a reliable source. Conceptual designs and cost estimates were prepared for the project. The proposed Level III project will include alluvial wells along Game Creek and water supply pipelines necessary to deliver water to the district. A bag filter system, necessary to meet EPA water quality requirements, will be funded from other sources.

Construction began in 1996 and should be completed in the spring of 1997.
