PROJECT INFORMATION:
Torrington has 5,750 people and supplies 2300 taps. The WWDC and
Torrington have completed an extensive water quality testing program to
determine the extent of nitrate contamination to the town's wells, and
the town continues to monitor nitrate levels in over 20 monitoring
wells. The master plan developed in 1995 expanded on the existing
information concerning nitrate levels and evaluated Torrington's
existing supply, storage, transmission, and distribution systems. The
study also examined the potential to expand Torrington's service area to
include surrounding subdivisions. The 1995 work identified additional
areas of concern, including the condition and remaining life of two
existing wells, the need for testing at the recommended site of a new
well field, a leak detection survey, a system model, and a supply source
analysis for the East Highway area. During the 1996 work season, an
extensive testing program was conducted near the Torrington golf course
as the potential site for a new well field. Work continued on a system
model for the area, and a leak detection program and fire flow testing
was completed. East Highway area opted to be dropped from the study. The
results of the study and recommendations will be presented to the 1998
Legislative session.
