Wyoming Weather Modification Program: Projects
Siting and Design
Medicine Bow and Sierra Madre Ranges
Building on the release of the preliminary summary findings of the WWMPP which showed an accumulation of evidence from the statistical, modeling, and physical analyses and suggested a positive seeding effect on the order of 5 to 15%, the Legislative Select Water Committee (SWC) put forth a Level III project to jumpstart the transition from research to operational cloud seeding programs in the Medicine Bow/Sierra Madre Ranges. The randomized statistical experiment portion of the WWMPP took place in the MBSM, and as such, a rich dataset of information exists for these ranges from nine years of study.
The final design and permitting study is being conducted by the Research Applications Laboratory (RAL) of the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in collaboration with Weather Modification, Inc.(WMI), and Heritage Environmental Consultants (Heritage). Work regarding the operational design to be deployed, including the method of seeding agent delivery (ground or airborne), the siting and ownership of generators, environmental permitting, operational and institutional constraints, and a benefit/cost analysis is underway.
