Big and Little Wind River Storage Feasibility Studies
Level I, Phase I

Big-Little Wind River Storage Studies
In March, 2014, the Wyoming Legislature appropriated funding for two Level II, Phase I Studies to investigate the feasibility associated with the addition of new surface water storage facilities and/or increased capacity in existing facilities on the Big and Little Wind River drainages. One study will focus on the Big Wind drainage while the other will take a look at the Little Wind drainage. The purpose of these studies is to expand upon the 2001 Upper Wind River Storage Project, Level I Study.

The primary use of stored surface water would be to augment late season irrigation water supply. Past studies have identified irrigation related shortages in the neighborhood of 185,000 acre-feet per year.

Sponsoring the two studies are the Eastern Shoshone and Northern Arapahoe Tribes, and the scope for each project includes a review of background information, hydrologic analysis, purpose and need determination, conservation and screening analysis, temporary stream gauging, alternatives analysis, archeological investigations, geotechnical investigation, economic analysis, and a final report comprising the results of the investigation. Contracts were signed in June, 2014 with Tetra Tech, Inc. of Casper, WY (Tetra Tech) assuming the lead engineering consulting role. Tetra Tech has joined with DOWL HKM, Riverside Technology, Harvey Economics, and Apex Surveying to round out the project team. In order to streamline project efficiencies, both contracts were awarded to the same project team. The term of the current contract is from:
June 5, 2014 - December 31, 2016 with a final report due November 1, 2016.
